Happy birthday to you...

The birthday club for November 4 includes the following:  Augustus Montague Toplady (yes, that's apparently his real name).  Why do you care?  Well because he wrote "Rock of Ages", that's why!  Now eat your vegetables, and stop talking back!

Interestingly, both Benjamin Robbins Curtis and Stephen Johnson Field were born on this date.  Even more interestingly, they both served on the US Supreme Court.

A much more interesting birthday came along in 1879, when the incomparable Will Rogers was born.  Funny, funny man, and a great student of humanity.  Good with a rope, too.

Skeeter Webb, baseball player was born on this date also.  He's mostly interesting because how can you not love a guy named "Skeeter"?

Walter Cronkite was also born on this date.  He was considered the most trusted man in America, which is ironic considering that he was a master of spinning the news to fit his own beliefs...  More worthwhile was the woman who shares his birthday, Ruth Handler.  Why, I hear you ask?  Because she invented the Barbie Doll.  And has been driving people crazy with it ever since, as they argue over whether little girls suffer from low self esteem because they don't think they're as beautiful as a frigging doll.  Thank God I'm a man!

John Basilone was also born today.  He was one who truly deserved the term "hero", since his service in WWII earned him a Medal of Honor, AND a Navy Cross, the latter unfortunately posthumously.  Oh, they were earned at Guadalcanal, where he defeated a Japanese force of 3000 men almost single-handedly; and at Iwo Jima.  I'm guessing his cajones were each the size of a blimp.

Art Carney is given the task of following "Manila John".  You probably know him, so I don't need to say much about him.  Talented and funny.

Another birthday boy is Freddy Heineken.  Guess what he's known for?  I don't even drink beer, and I guessed!

Another famous Marine was also born on this date.  His name?  E.B Sledge.  He wrote a terrific memoir of his experience "With the Old Breed".  It was one of the main sources for the HBO series "The Pacific", and is at the top of most reading lists for people interested in the War.  Can't recommend it strongly enough.

Another celebrant, and possibly winner of "most annoying person to have a birthday today" is Doris Roberts.  I'm sure she's perfectly lovely in real life, but her character as Ray's mom in the dull series "Everybody loves Ray (except History Snark)" annoyed the hell out of me, and helped make the show unwatchable.  Along with everything else about it.

Speaking of TV actresses, give a birthday kiss to Loretta Swit.  I have it on good authority that she has Hot Lips... ;)

Also celebrating is Laura Bush, former first lady.  She seems nice, so I won't snark on her.    Unlike untalented and disgusting "artist" Robert Mapplethorpe, who was born the exact same day.  That's one sick puppy.

Another actress, and the hottest of those mentioned today (so far) is Markie "Christine Sullivan" Post.  She was awesome as Elliot's mom on Scrubs, too.  And on the "ewwww" side of things, there are rumors that a certain horndog US president snuck out of the White House a couple times to spend some-ahem- quality time- with her.

Oh, and speaking of no talent hacks who annoyed the hell out of me, happy birthday Kathy Griffin!

A nice toast to Daniel LaRusso himself, Ralph Macchio.  If you've never seen his movie "Crossroads", go find it.  It's actually pretty good.  And he was of course entertaining in "My Cousin Vinnie".  And if you've never seen "Wax on, F*** off" on Funny or Die, check that out.  It's hilarious.

I suggest we strike this date in 1969 from our records, as it brought into the world both Sean Combs AND Matthew McConaughey.  Ugh.

Also, born today was Trishelle Cannatella.  She was on some reality TV show, thus deserving all the eye rolls you can muster.  On the other hand, she's smoking hot; which I suspect is her only redeeming quality.

In NFL news, both Vince Wilfork and Devin Hester were born on this date, in 1981 and 1982 respectively.  I don't have much to say here, other than they both suck, and GO LIONS!!!
