So who shuffled away today? Well, let's start with Richard Sorge, Soviet spy. He did some good for the USSR, like warning them that Germany was gonna attack. Of course, it would have done more good if good old Stalin had bothered to listen. Nor did anyone care that he apparently warned about Pearl Harbor. Well, they say that a prophet is without honor in his own land, and Sorge would seem to prove that.
Eleanor Roosevelt bit the big one today. 18 years after her hubby was elected president. Again. There's a lesson there, perhaps. Or not.
In 1980, Steve McQueen died. His car chase in "Bullitt" is supposed to be the best ever. There must be two movies of that name, because the one I saw had a pretty dull car chase. Go figure. I just saw an article that he was supposed to be going out to have a good time with Sharon Tate and a friend one night. He didn't go (probably got a better offer, if you know what I mean). Good thing- his friend and Ms Tate met the Manson Family that night. Bet Steve thought about that one for the rest of his life. And probably thanked his "other offer" too.
Baseball fans will mourn the 2006 death of Johnny Sain. He was a pitching coach for many years, including for the Tigers. He also had a pretty good career as a pitcher. He was half of the pitching rotation the Boston Braves had, famously immortalized as "Spahn and Sain, and pray for rain". He died in Downers Grove Illinois, which was where my aunt lived.
And on that note, we end. Short and sweet.
Bye.
