They're checking out

RIP today to Louis The Child, one of the Eastern Franks.  He was a Carolingian, but not for that long.  He didn't do much besides go down in history with a cute little name.

Remember when I reminded you the other day that Guy Fawkes wasn't the leader of the Gunpowder Plot?  Know who was?  Robert Catesby.  He died today, at the hands of the English, in a (presumably very short) pitched battle.

And speaking of people named Milton, which we did earlier today, RIP John Milton.  He lost Paradise.  Possibly somebody snuck in, paved it and put up a parking lot, though this is uncertain.

What's up Doc?  Well, all his time on earth, assuming you're talking about Doc Holliday.  He made it to 36, which between the drinking, the gambling, the fighting, and the tuberculosis, was a pretty good run.  Here's another fun fact:  Remember how Margaret Mitchell was born on this date in 1900?  Well she was a relative of Holliday, though I've just been reading and one article claims they were related by marriage and the other just says they were "distantly cousins".  It's also possible that she used Holliday as the source for Ashley Wilkes in her book.  Sadly, he'd been dead for 13 years before she was born.

Norman Rockwell died today also.  I wonder if anyone did a whimsical painting of his funeral, in order to represent the Good Old Days of American Art.  Or how much Steven Wright paid for his rare print of Norman Rockwell beating up a child... though it's possible that Wright made that up.  He wasn't smiling, but it still could have been a joke!

And on that note...
