Time marches on to November 10

Big things afoot on this date.  For starters, we put Descartes before Deshorse, as Mssr.  René Descartes, (who my sources assure me was a drunken fart) had a weird dream; which ended up giving him the motivation to write "Meditations on first philosophy".  Presumably, he wrote, therefore he was an author.

The US Marine Corps was founded on this day, in a tavern.  If you've ever spent any time with a marine, you know how appropriate that is!  But the good news is it allows those who aren't manly enough or cool enough to join the Army, to have an alternative way to join the military.  Sure, they could join the Navy or Air Force, but then that wouldn't be the military, would it?

One of the coolest examples of a British stiff upper lip was demonstrated today, unfortunately by a Welshman.  Henry Morton Stanley met Doctor Henry Livingston in the wilds of Africa, and greeted him with the immortal words "Well, a right bugger you lot have made of this mess!".  I kid- he of course said "Dr. Livingston I presume?"  Only he didn't abbreviate "Doctor" the way I did.

And the event transpired which allowed lots of people around the world (I guess) to finally find out where and what Lake Superior is, and why they're called "The Great Lakes".  Yup, it's Edmund Fitzgerald day, as the ship and it's 29 crew members bit the big one.  Tragic.

And we end with a bit of amusing history, showing that even kings have finite patience.  In 2007, King Juan Carlos of Spain was at the Ibero-American Summit in Chile.  The Spanish prime minister was speechifying, and second rate jackwagon Hugo Chavez was continually being a jackwagon and interrupting.  Finally, the king got irked enough to utter those famous words that everyone wants to say when they're forced to listen to a communist speak "¿Por que no te callas?"  Nicely put, eh?  Wait- you don't speak Spanish?  Well, it translates roughly as "Why don't you just shut up?"

The end.
