December 12 RIP

First off we meet Carloman II, king of the West Franks.  He was a descendant (one would presume) of Charlemagne.  He and his brother split the Frankish kingdom, but then Carloman died.  I presume that, at some point, his brother did the same.  Sorry.  That's about all I have, except that he died in 884.

Nothing interesting happened on the death front until 1976, when Jack Cassidy died.  He was the father of David, Shaun, and the whole gang.  Fun fact:  Remember when Ted Knight was Ted Baxter in the Mary Tyler Moore Show?  The character was kinda based on Cassidy, and was intended to be played by him.  He turned it down, but did later appear as Ted's brother.

Another sad death was Ian Stewart.  He was the first person to join an unknown band in the 1960s, soon followed by a couple other folks- Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.  He was kicked out, being unsuited to their image, and instead became their road manager, still playing with the Band and others until his death in 1985.

And speaking of influential musicians from the 60s and 70s- and in this case the 50s- Ike Turner died on this date in 2007.  He was a real piece of work, as his ex-wife Tina can attest; but boy was he a musician.  He recorded "Rocket 88" back in the early 50s, which is arguably the first ever "rock and roll" song.  And it's still a kickass driving song!  Give it a listen.

Another short list, but a worthy one.  Later.
