December 15 RIP

Well, a pretty ugly event happened today in 1890, which cheesed off a lot of people:  On some of their reservations, American Indians had a bit of a spiritual resurgence, which led to a movement called The Ghost Dance.  One of the most influential Indian Holy men was a guy named Sitting Bull.  The local Indian agent was afraid that Bull would support the movement, thus giving it a lot more credibility.  So he ordered the Indian police to arrest him.  A fight broke out, shots were fired, and well... RIP Sitting Bull.

We're gonna make a bit of an assumption here.  RIP Glenn Miller, who disappeared on this date in 1944.  The presumption is his plane was shot down over the English Channel.  Another presumption is that he died then.  However, it's possible, though not likely, that he survived for a day or more.  That sometimes happens when someone goes missing.  That being said, there's no reason to believe he was alive on the 16th, so we can call it good.  One of his peers-Artie Shaw, I believe- some years ago proclaimed that it would have been better if Miller had lived and his music had died.  Yeah, Artie Shaw was apparently not the nicest guy in the world.

Another entertainment legend also died on this date.  RIP Walt Disney, who went away on this date in 1966.  I thought he lived a bit longer- I remember him introducing shows on the Wonderful World of Disney, though it certainly could have been reruns.  Or I could remember it- I was young, but not a baby, so who knows.  Or cares.

Finally, 2010 saw a couple people shuffle off.  The first was Blake Edwards, who directed the early and good "Pink Panther" movies, and married Julie Andrews.  The second was Bob Feller, who didn't.  He did however have a greatly successful career as a baseball player, and is still regarded as one of the greatest pitchers of all time.

Thus endeth the blog post.
