December 7 birthdays

Today in 1863, an American boy named Richard Sears was born.  He went into business as an adult.  Guess what Mr. Sears founded?    I'll give you a clue:  His partner was named Alvah C. Roebuck.

Ted Knight was also born on this date, in 1923.  He's best known as Ted Baxter on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and as Judge Smails in Caddyshack.  And really, other than the mediocre Too Close For Comfort,  what else did he need?  Ted Baxter and the Judge makes a great career.  He was also a WWII veteran, serving in the European Theater.  His real name, by the way, was Tadeusz Wladyslaw Konopka, so I guess it was better that he changed it.

A talented songwriter and storyteller, Harry Chapin was also born on this date in 1942.  Some of his stuff was great, but I was quite surprised a few years ago to learn he had been nominated for an Academy Award as a documentary filmmaker.  The film in question, "Legendary Champions" sounds like an interesting film.  Hard to find though.

Have some fried possum, cheap beer, and shoot some hoops with The Hick From French Lick, aka Larry Bird.  Interesting fact:  When he and his team made it to the NCAA Finals against the mighty Spartans of Michigan State, a lot of people were shocked at his appearance- a talented player who could pass, shoot and defend... and he was WHITE?  What's up with that?  But it was true!  Still is, in fact!

And that's about it.  Not too many interesting people born on this date.  So be it!
