December RIP for the rth

It's a big day for a chap named Charles today.  His little brother Carloman dies, and leaves Chuck as his successor- not his heir.  Charles essentially just took Carloman's land, and forced his nephews to flee.  Chuck thus becomes the king of the united Frankish kingdom, and soon becomes known as Charles the Great, or Charlemagne.  Which would have irked the hell out of Carloman, since the two apparently weren't on the best terms.

Thomas Hobbes also died on this date.  Despite what you would think, his life was by no means "Nasty, brutish and short", as he lived to be over 90.  And he wasn't a Leviathan either.

Frank Zappa also died on this date, but not because of some stupid with a flare gun.  It was cancer.  Some years ago, I read an article about him- it discussed how so many people view him as a genius.  Because his music was so... different.  But it was, by most objective standards, crappy music.  So the argument goes that it was crappy because it was brilliant, and if you don't recognize it as brilliant (but only as crappy) that's because you just don't "get it".  Not buying it- it was just, for the most part, crappy.

Liam Clancy also died on this date.  He was one of the Clancy Brothers, not surprisingly.  He was not Tommy Makem, however.  But they did perform together, making some really cool Irish music.
