Well let's start off with a mention of a recently departed friend. Remember Justinian The Great? He died the other day. But before he did, he created a code of civil laws, called (among other things) the Codex Justinianus. And today is the day it was published in its final form.
In 1532, Pizarro and his band of merry cutthroats met the Inca emperor, Atahualpa. They of course captured him too. If I were a betting man, I'd put money on things not going well for the Emperor after this.
My New Mexico friends will be excited to know that this date marks the first arrival there of a gringo by means of what becomes known as The Santa Fe Trail. His name was William Becknell, by the way, and the calendar read 18 and 22.
And hey, remember the controversy over whether or not Churchill knew about the bombing of Coventry before it happened? We still don't have a resolution, but on this date, the RAF decided to retaliate, and bombed Hamburg. I don't think the Germans were all that impressed this time. Later, the Brits (and Americans) gave it another go. The results were... what? Is it fair to say "better"? I guess we'll stick with "the results were more effective", and leave it at that.
In 1973, President Nixon signed a bill authorizing the construction of the Alaska Pipeline. Environmentalists went nuts, claiming that it would hurt all the little animals. Ever hear anything supporting that claim? Yeah, me neither. In fact, the obvious evidence shows that the animals like the pipeline. It has heat, which they enjoy. Too bad the environmentalists still get a listen when they warn about drilling in Alaska.
The End.
