...History is the game. Or whatever.
On this date, a conquistador named Cabeza de Vaca is shipwrecked. In Texas, of all places. No other European has ever set foot there before him. Congrats on being the first. Apparently his name means "head of cow", so I guess that makes him an appropriate precursor to the Texas cattlemen. If I recall correctly from Michael Wood and his awesome series "The Conquistadors" (and I do) he spent several years trying to get from the Galveston area to Mexico City. He and his few companions were in quite close contact with the local tribes, occasionally being enslaved. At any rate, he was kinda sorta the first anthropologist to study the tribes.
In 1632, the Swedes defeated the German types at the Battle of Lützen. That's the good news. The bad news... Well, we'll see the name of King Gustavus Adolphus again today, if you know what I mean.
Jefferson Davis on this date was elected president of the Confederate States of America. Umm, congrats? Fun fact- some people wanted him elected president of the US in 1860. If he had been nominated and victorious, that would have changed history dramatically. But then, if he had been nominated, he had about a snow ball's chance in Hell of winning, so it's pretty pointless. On the other hand, the US election of 1860 was also on this date (Davis was elected in 1861), so both Lincoln and Davis shared the same election day. As well as being born pretty darn close to each other, in Kentucky.
Not a terribly exciting day in history, but that's the way it works sometimes.
