You say it's your birthday

Edmund de Mortimer says so.  And he should know, I guess.  He was a relative of the English king- which one?  Hard to keep straight, so let's go with "a bunch of them".

Also Queen Karin Månsdotter of Sweden.  I don't speak Swedish, but it sure looks like they were acknowledging that her father was a man.  That's useful to know, eh?

Happy birthday to John Philip Sousa.  If you don't know who he was, you're not an American.

James Naismith was also born on this date.  He'd probably be pretty bummed today, since he invented basketball; and they're on strike while they decide whether the owners or the arrogant ass players should get more money.  Then again, it's basketball, so nobody in their right mind should really care about the strike.

Remember the other day when I referred to Grover Cleveland Alexander as the third best pitcher in baseball history, and Cy Young (obviously) as the greatest?  Well darned if today isn't the birthday of Walter Johnson, who was number two on that list.

Edsel Ford also had a birthday today.  Thank God he wasn't around to see what his name became a code for, huh?

Happy birthday also to James D. Norris.  He was at one point the part owner of the Chicago Black Hawks of the NHL, while also a vice-president of the Detroit Red Wings.  Wonder if he just rooted for whoever had the puck.

Ray Conniff was born on this date.  If he remember the Ray Conniff Singers, you're old.  If you liked them, you have no taste.

Happy Birthday to Sally Field.  If you remember the Smoky & The Bandit films, then you like her.  You really like her!

My homeboy Glenn Frey was born on this date, though he grew up in Royal Oak.  Thus, he's not quite 100% Detroiter.  But he's still pretty cool.

The scrumptious Lori Singer was born on this date too.  She was hot hot hot in "The Man with One Red Shoe".  If you're into the tall, slim, athletic blonde, then she's close to the gold standard.  She was also the lead in "Footloose"- the original one, not the crappy remake that most people have already forgotten about after 3 weeks.

Rebecca "My sister Sam" Shaeffer had a birthday today.  Sadly, she had too few of them, as she was killed by a stalker.  Her death was pretty much the one that brought stalking into the public consciousness, so I guess that's a relatively good thing.  Crappy way to get it though.

Speaking of tall, slender, athletic blondes, wish a happy birthday to Rebecca Romijn.

Pat Tillman, a football player with real guts was born on this date.  He gave it all up to join the Army after September 11, and was unfortunately killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire.  Not to make light of it all, but one of "Murphy's Laws of Combat" states the following:  Friendly fire ain't friendly.  And that was brought home once again by his death.  It was unfortunate, but when the crap hits the fan, friendly fire happens.  Doesn't make it any less sucky when it happens, but it does.

And luckily, Tillman occupies the place of honor as our last person of note to be born on this date.
