Emperor Constantius II... Martin de Porres, who was a saint. Literally... Annie Oakley took J. Geils advice, and decided to shoot her shot on this day in 1926. "I said, yeah yeah baby/come on show what you got" . (Got carried away again, but being a Detroiter, I love me some Geils!)... Condolences also to the family of Solomon Guggenheim, who presumably didn't let them keep any of his art collection... Henri Matisse also died on this date, speaking of art... Aww, how sweet- remember Laika the dog, who was lost in space? She even gets a mention in my source. Poor little thing!... Mary Martin also died on this date. Did you know she was the mother of old J.R. himself, Larry Hagman? If so, then fie on you! If not, then make a contribution to my pocket, please!...
If you're a fan of the Beach Boys (or of Sheldon Cooper), you'll be sad to know that Leon Theremin died on this date. He invented the theremin, used to great effect in songs like "Good Vibrations", and also to annoy the hell out of Leonard Hofstadter and the gang...Lonnie Donegan also died. He was at the top of the British charts on that fateful day when Lennon met McCartney... Fans of instrumental 60s pop (both of you) will no doubt mourn the passing of Paul Mauriat... And Carl Ballantine, comic, magician and McHale's Navy sailor Lester Gruber finishes off our list.
