December 19 Birthdays!

Happy birthday to General James Archer of the Confederacy.  He's best known for being the first general from the Army of Northern Virginia to be captured in battle.  It was the Iron Brigade that got him, on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. He was born in 1817.

Speaking of the "rot in hell" portion of our little blog, happy birthday to Leonid Brezhnev, former Soviet Leader.  He slithered out from beneath the stones of Hell in 1906, and died in 1982, after ruling a slave empire for a couple decades.

Happy birthday to Little Jimmy Dickens, a relative of Charles, but from the West Virginia branch of the Dickenseseses.  He was born in 1920, and got his nickname due to being only 4'11" tall.  He had a successful run as a country music act, mostly doing humorous stuff like "may the bird of paradise fly up your nose".  But he also discovered Marty Robbins, which is worth something, I guess.  Apparently he appeared this year at the CMA awards dressed up as Justin Beiber, a name which I hope shall neber again deface my blog.  I say "apparently" because the CMA awards are about as interesting to me as watching a TV test pattern while a herd of cats gets tortured in the background.  Which means, lest you think I'm picking on "country" music, that it's still more interesting than the Grammys.

Detroit celebrates a birthday today, sort of.  It was on this date in 1926 that Bobby Layne was born.  So go out, get completely crap-faced, and then play some football today.  That'll be an appropriate celebration for Layne.  He was, of course, the last good quarterback the Detroit Lions had until 2009 when they drafted Matthew Stafford.  And Layne is also the last quarterback to win an NFL championship to Detroit.  By the way, in case you aren't a Lions fan (we alll know this, as it's been beaten into our heads over the last three years); Layne and Stafford went to the same high school in Dallas.

Oooh, even bigger news for Detroit sportsters.  Happy birthday to the one and only Al Kaline!  He was my favorite player when I was a lad.  Still is, I guess.  He's still the youngest MLB player to win a batting title, doing it at the age of 20.  And of course he was a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame after retirement.  His grandson is a minor leaguer in the Tigers organization today.  And "Mr. Tiger" still works in the Team's front office.

Best wishes to Alvin Lee, born on this date in 1944.  He'd love to change the world, but he don't know what to do.  So he'll leave it up to you.  On that same day, we also got Venus Flytrap himself, aka Tim Reid.  And Zal Yanovsky of the Lovin' Spoonful as well. We talked about Zal last week, as he almost got him a Daily Double.

Also born on this date, in 1960 was Bobby Brady himself, Mike Lookinland.  I bet puberty was a cast iron *itch for him, having to be around step-sisters Marcia Marcia Marcia and Cindy.  Thank God that Jan was there to eliminate any sort of naughty feelings a guy might have.

What a feeling!  It's Flashdance time!  And it's happy birthday for Jennifer Beals, born on this date in 1964.

In 1969, the race for hottest birthday girl got tighter when Kristy Swanson was born.  She was the original Buffy in the movie version.  You know, the Slayer and all that.  She was amazingly hot in those days, since she had to keep in tiptop shape.  Haven't seen her in a while, but last time I did... well.  No comment.  Sigh.

If you're into Italian chicks who like baseball, then you'll want to celebrate with Alyssa Milano.  But she's probably not doing much partying to celebrate birthday number 39.  I think she just had a kid.  Or is due to pop one out soon.  Whichever.

Ooh, I think we have a hottest birthday girl winner.  Happy birthday to Paulina Gretzky, who takes more after momma than daddy.  She's pretty wild apparently- it seems that Daddy just told her to tone down the partying and racy pictures, so he can buy a hockey team.  As if that would make a difference in his candidacy.  Anyhow, she's a mere lass of 23.

And that's that.  Impressive day for Detroit athletes and hot women.
