November 29 birthdays

If you're into Little Women, then you'll be glad to hear that Louis May Alcott was born on this date in 1832.  If you're into Little Men, you might feel the same.  Me, I kinda prefer the taller women, but that's not carved in stone.

If you want to have a great big, flamboyant, colorful spectacle of a party today, you're almost out of time.  But have it in celebration of the birthday of Busby Berkeley.  He was, I guess, the source for the director in the big climactic fight scene in "Blazing Saddles", where the role was played by Dom Deluise.  The real Berkeley did some real movies too, I guess.

If you feel like singing the blues, then doing it on John Mayall's birthday doesn't really feel right. You should just rock out!  Preferably with some of his fellow Brit-Blues legends.  (I just made that term up!  I think.)

If you're feeling like you want some California Dreamin', then you have something in common with Denny Doherty, who was born on this date in 1940.  He famously slept with Michelle Philips, while she was still married to John.  He did however reject (repeatedly) the unmarried woman of the Mamas and Papas, Cass Elliot.  Long years later, he confessed that rejecting her was the biggest mistake of his life.  He stumbled along in the music and entertainment biz for decades.  The mind boggles at what might have changed if he had accepted her marriage proposal:  Cass might have lived longer than she did, and might still me making incredibly music today.  Too bad, cuz she was quite a talent.  Oh well.  Also born on that same day was Chuck Mangione.  He recorded "Feels so good" back in the day, which was a big instrumental hit.  But he's a jazz musician, and jazz doesn't often sell like that.  So while I guess he's still around, he's kinda stumbled along too.  Though that might not be a fair assessment.

"The ball spun off Tim McCarver's bat...." So begins the book "Behind the Mask", by birthday boy Bill Freehan, former catcher for the Detroit Tigers.  That little paragraph recalls the final out of the 1968 World Series, when tv analyst McCarver popped out to Freehan, giving Detroit the clinching victory.  Still one of my fondest childhood memories.  Happy birthday, big guy!

Owner of the creepiest eyes in movie history, Jeff Fahey has a birthday today too.  He was awesome in "Silverado", but then so was everyone else.  Great movie.  And he really does have some scary dark eyes.

One of the more bizarre people you'll ever meet was also born on this date.  Howie Mandel.  His standup was actually kind of funny in a frenetic, wild way.  But this was the 80s, so maybe I'm wrong.  Of course, given that he's Canadian, I probably am.

Speaking of Hot Messes, happy birthday to Kim Delaney.  She was amazing in "Tour of Duty" back in the day.  Now, she's still kinda hot, but....

Hey, remember Anna Nicole Smith's birthday the other day?  Well today is the birthday of Howard K. Stern, aka "not that Howard Stern", her lawyer.  He took his role as lawyer awfully seriously, giving her a lot of- ahem- extra services- for her last couple of years.  I think that whole mess got him disbarred, but I'm not sure.  It probably should have though.

It's also the birthday of Mariano Rivera, NY Yankees closer.  I normally wouldn't care, but he has the most saves of any player in baseball history.  And I just read today that he's having some kind of throat issue, and might need surgery on his vocal cords.  Yuck.  Good luck, big fella.

Hmmm.  Racing ahead of Kim Delaney today is Ashley Force, of the Racing Force Family.  She's hot.  Not crazy like Kim, but that's not a bad thing.

And there you have it.
